My Personal Mission Statement

Mission Statement: It is my mission to positively influence the lives of all people that I
work with, both professionally and personally. I will accomplish this by maintaining a positive
and optimistic attitude in difficult situations and by emphasizing the strengths of each person that
I work with, in order to encourage them to embrace and build on these strengths in their own
lives. I will maintain a positive attitude by focusing on positive aspects of each situation I
encounter, such as how both myself and the other person can learn from the situation and placing
an emphasis on the fact that measures are being taken to improve the situation. I will realize the
strengths of others by talking to them and becoming more familiar with their lives. I will then
emphasize these strengths by encouraging other people to pursue actions that are well-suited for
them, based on these strengths.

This personal mission statement follows the NASW vales of importance of human
relationships and recognizing the dignity and worth of all people. My mission statement
emphasizes the importance of human relationships by stating that I will build relationships with
others in order to uncover their strengths and encourage them to engage in activities that
emphasize these strengths. The statement also emphasizes the idea that each person has dignity
and worth because it assumes that each person has their own strengths and each person has the
ability to improve their lives in some way buy engaging in activities that build off of these
strengths.
One major difference between my personal mission statement and the values of the
NASW Code of Ethics is that my personal mission statement does not have a strong focus on the
idea of social justice. While advocacy is an important aspect of the social work profession, my

personal mission statement is focused on working and improving the lives of individuals on a
one-on-one basis. While I do hope to engage in advocacy and macro-level work in both my
personal and professional life, they are not part of my main focus and goals, and, therefore, do
not appear in my mission statement.
