Book Thief Part 1

In this novel, a story is being told of a little girl named Liesel Meminger whom
will eventually be referred to as being The Book Thief. It all started with a journey to
a new home with her brother and mother. On the train ride to her new home Liesels
brother slowly passed away in the train seat across from Liesel. The train had to
stop to do something with the body of her lost brother. Liesels brother was buried
with a very small crowd, which consisted of two guards, a grave digger and one
other person. After Liesels brother was buried she noticed a little black square
poking out of the snow, she reached down to grab it. Without being noticed she
picked a booked out of the snow and put the book away into her coat pocket.
After her brother was buried Liesel and her mother were herded back onto
the train to complete the journey to her new home. At some point during the ride
Liesels mother could no longer go with Liesel. Once Liesel arrived at her new home
waiting outside were her new foster parents, the Hubermanns. There was a little
spout outside, while trying to get Liesel into her new home, which lead to the whole
street turning and staring. To end this little debacle for everyone to watch Mrs.
Hubermann cursed to the others down the street in German. Liesel ended up
getting very comfortable at her new home, despite her nightmares each night.
Liesel would end up calling Mr. and Mrs. Hubermann Papa and Mama, respectively.
Liesel did not get along well with the other kids because they would always
make fun of her because she couldnt read. There is one boy who is now best
friends with Liesel, that boys name is Rudy Steiner. Rudy was the one to show her
around the street and teach her how to interact with each individual person on the

street. Her school life was not too great until one day she stood in front of the class
and read a passage from her book she stole.
The format of this novel is a little different from any other novel/book I have
read. First of all, it is narrated by Death itself, this is an interesting idea for a novel
that includes so much death. Another thing that makes the format of this story
different from others I have read, the story is interrupted by big bold letters and
messages giving the reader background information. Before I started reading, I saw
the interruptions and thought that they would make the story harder to read, but it
really doesnt.
These tiny interruptions remind me of myself when I am telling a story of my
own that I find funny. For example, when telling stories of my stepdad or my oldest
brother, I always stop for a second in the middle of the story to inform whoever is
listening of things that are important to the story. Obviously, I am not relating
myself to Death, I am just saying the format of the storytelling is similar to how I like
to tell my own stories.
As I am reading this novel I am wondering why so much emphasis is put on
the environment and the colors of the surroundings. I have taken art classes before
and I learned that some colors are associated with certain moods or feelings. Other
details of the environment are much emphasized in this novel, such as the muddy
snow and the slushy streets, emphasizing how dirty that area was during that time.
The kids are constantly playing in mud among other stuff that makes up the
contents of the street and as soon as they get home they are called filthy pigs by
their parent, like they can help the fact that the streets are disgusting. The
emphasis on the environment really puts a depressing kind of tone on the story.

At one point in the novel, Max and Liesel start spending a lot of time together
although no words are spoken out loud. Max eventually says to Leisel to describe
the weather to him. This one specific day Max asked for the weather report and
Liesel responded with:
The sky is blue today, Max, and there is a big long cloud, and its stretched out, like
a rope. At the end of it, the sun is like a yellow hole.
Max then began to paint this picture on the wall.
I like this quote/part from the book because I enjoy art and understand that
some art has deeper meaning to it than what the picture depicts. You could look at a
picture of a man a thousand times and just see a man. But to some other people it
might have a more significant meaning.

I have found a lot of sources on my topic question that provide valuable
information to support my thesis. Based on the information I have found, my thesis
is beginning to form. At first I was wanting to research how colors can affect a
persons emotions, but now I am researching more about how these colors can be
used in certain situations to cause an effect of someone.
Most of the information I have found on my topic, I have learned already or
learned a variation of the same information. I have taken a few art classes in high
school and we would always go over color theory in class and we would discuss
what makes colors and why use colors. Most of the answers to those questions were
pretty simple, color comes from white light passing through a prism separating the

different colored lights, or simply color adds detail. There is so much more to
color than just those few things, which is what I am trying to find more information
on.
In my art classes through the years, we have discussed many ways
corporations us colors on a daily basis to increase their business. Regular people
may not notice these tactics in use, but they are working every single day. From
what I have learned from my previous art classes, the color red makes you anxious
and in most cases, hungry, and yellow is an irritant, it hurts your eyes, so you dont
want to be around yellow very long. Food corporations often use red and yellow in
their establishments to increase their business. For example, McDonalds, its colors
are red and yellow, they are used together on the inside and on the outside.
I dont know exactly who I am writing this inquiry paper for, I am just writing
to write about something I want to learn about. I enjoy art and I am actually pretty
decent at painting and drawing (when I am motivated to do so).

Science shows a very evident change in life on earth over the several
thousand years, supporting the hypothesis of evolution. Yet many still seem to
ignore the evidence, and tend to believe that God put life on this planet the way it is
and it has never changed.
Do I have any naysayers in my text?

I wouldnt call them naysayers, instead I

would just say they have different opinions or evidence of how colors effect
emotions. One might say that certain colors have set emotional attributes, and that
those are one hundred percent accurate all the time. Another might say that the
emotional effects of color exposure depends on who is looking at the colors and how
one persons culture may interpret the same colors differently. One is disagreeing

with the other saying that the emotional effects of color arent one hundred percent
accurate all the time.
