The document argues that the US needs to continue and expand offshore drilling for several reasons: 1) the US currently imports around 60% of the oil it uses, so drilling domestically would lower energy costs and reliance on foreign oil; 2) drilling creates jobs and revenue for the US economy; 3) while there are risks to all energy production, offshore drilling is a practical option that can help meet high energy demand and is not as dangerous as often portrayed. The document notes that oil spills from rigs are very rare and that the majority of oil entering waterways comes from natural seepage and other sources besides rigs.

Furthering exploration and drilling creates jobs and brings revenue into the US economy To lower energy costs To stop relying on other countries for oil such as Saudi Arabia.
Isnt Offshore Drilling
Dangerous?
There is risk involved with every type of
energy production using fossil fuels However, with such high demand for energy offshore drilling is a very practical option Offshore drilling is not nearly as dangerous as the media portrays
What about BP?
The BP Oil Spill (also known as the
Deepwater Horizon Spill) was one of only a handful of rigs that failed and caused a explosion/spill in US waters. In fact only 1% of oil that is spilled into the water comes from oil rigs
Where does the rest come from?
63% of oil that goes into the water
comes from natural seepage. Natural seepage is where pressure builds up under the ocean floor and pushes oil out through pores The rest comes from various things such as oil tankers exploding/turning-over and improper disposal of oil.
So oil rigs arent that
bad? No they are not. Domestic offshore drilling turns out to be a lot safer than any of our other options due to our countrys level of safety standards. The media looks at spills that occur very rarely and over-exaggerate. This causes people to call for an all out ban on drilling when one does happen due to the common persons limited understanding of the topic.
