Camping In Treetops Assignment

In this unit you learned about how patterns follow rules and how they can be represented in
many ways. Tables, graphs, and input/output machines all have helped to show a pattern and to
make predictions.
Part 1: Use a rope and tie an overhand, double hand, and figure eight knot. On an 11x17 paper
measure and record the length of each rope when you have tied the same knots five times. After
each knot measure and record the length of the rope using a table that indicates the number of
knots and the length of the rope in cm. Below the table include a statement about how the length
of the rope changes as more knots are added. (PLEASE LABEL PART ONE FOR THIS
SECTION)
Part 2: For each knot draw a graph to compare the number of knots to the length of rope. On a
separate piece of paper describe any patterns you see. (For example, the length of the rope
decreases by about 4cm each time.) Using your graph make a prediction on what the length
would be with a certain number of knots, then check each prediction, and explain the difference
between your prediction and the actual results. (For example, I predict with seven knots the
length would be) (PLEASE LABEL PART TWO FOR THIS SECTION)
Part 3: On a separate piece of paper write in point form a statement comparing the three
experiments. (For example, a knot that requires more turns shortens the rope at a faster rate)
(PLEASE LABEL PART THREE FOR THIS SECTION)
