Overviewoflesson:
Forthislessonwewillbemodelingtheactionsofliterati.org.Thisorganizationcaptures
picturesoflitterinourlocalcommunities,disposesoflitter,andthenconnectseveryonetothe
locationoflitterthroughthehashtag.ThesepictureswillbepostedtoInstagramwiththe
hashtag#litteratiand#(classname).

Then,asaclass,wewillexaminetheseInstagramposts,plotwheretheyoccurinthe
communityonalocalmap,andcompilethenamesofthecompanieswhofrequentlyhave
litter.

Oncethisiscompleted,studentswillbesplitintogroupsof3or4tocreateaPSAviaiMovie,
awriteletter,awriteasong,etc,toaspecificcompanywhoseproductsarefrequentlyfound
andlocalgovernmentofficialswhocanhelp.Theseshouldincludesolutionstothelittering
problem!

Studentswillthenpresenttheirannouncementstotheclassandtheclassasawholewill
anonymouslyvoteforonepresentationtoactuallysendtothatcompany.Then,thestudents

whocreatedthisprojectwillworkwiththeclasstoperfecttheannouncementtosendtothe
companyorgovernmentofficials.

Lastly,studentswillbeinchargeofwritingashortreflectionontheirexperienceandimpactof
pollution.

ConnectiontoPriorKnowledge
:Studentswillneedtounderstandtheimpactoflitteringon
theenvironment.Thestudentswillalsohavetomaketheconnectionbetweenthislittering
beingaglobalproblem,aswellasalocalproblem.Theywillneedtodrawontheirprior
knowledgeofsolutionstolitteringproblems.

Studentswillcreateapublicserviceannouncementtovoicetheiropinionstomajor
companies,andlocalgovernmentofficialsadvocatingforchangebasedontheirfindings
abouttheircommunity.Studentswillalsocompleteareflection,reflectingontheirworkand
howtheiropinionaboutlitterandtheimpactscompaniesandgovernmenthasoverthe
environment.
