This

is a hands-on Civics and Citizenship excursion for Year 5. Students explore and engage
in the cultural program at Ngutana-Lui to develop an awareness and understanding of the
different cultural groups that are in the community. Students reflect on the information
learnt and discovered on their excursion to self reflect on their learnt understandings and
where they would like to see their learning develop.

Teacher Background Knowledge:
The theme of our visit to Ngutana-Lui

Teacher Instructions:
Explore with students the Aboriginal and Indigenous cultural centre Ngutana-Lui. Engage
students in discussion and cultural meanings as they participate in the program. Organise
students into their excursion group and assign a parent/teacher helper to be matched with
the group.

Students Prior Knowledge:
That people belong in groups for a variety of reasons
Whole class look at the Ngutana-Lui website to engage in excursion topics

Modification for students needs:
Group pairing: Students who may easily loose focus with those who are better able
to scaffold their learning (peer scaffolding)
Parents invited to attend excursion to assist with groupings and engagement

Students engage with Literacy as they respond to learning area context information and
participate in the learning excursion to build ideas. Students engage with Cultural and
creative thinking as they pose questions to clarify information and ideas. Engagement with
Personal and social capability and Intercultural understanding as they appreciate diverse
perspectives, develop respect for cultural diversity and engage significantly with a
community to enhance understanding.

Assessment:
Assessment focus: During this activity students engage with a cultural group and explore
their influence in the community.
Assessment as learning: Students engage with a Self reflection Sheet to critical reflect in
their engagement with the excursion and where they would like to see their learning
develop.
