Teacher: Ms.

Kirsten Gaje
Grade Level/Subject Area: 3rd grade Math
Standard: 3.G.A.1 Reason with shapes and their attributes
Learning Objective: Given a set of shapes and their attributes, the student will be able
to recognize the similarities and differences between the shapes without any assistance.
Required Materials: SMARTBoard, list of shapes and their pictures

Anticipatory Set: By introducing the SMARTBoard, I will draw different shapes on the
board and discuss the characteristics of each shape, informing the students that they will be
working on understanding the differences between the shapes.

Instruction:
-I will start the lesson by drawing shapes using the SMARTBoard such as triangles, squares,
rectangles, pentagons, etc.
-I will then use the SMARTBoard tools, such as the magnifying tool, to draw attention to the
amount of sides that each shape has and explaining the differences between them
-I will then use the line tool on the SMARTBoard to draw T chart of the characteristics of the
geometric shapes and have the students tell me which similarities and differences they see
between the shapes and I will write it in the appropriate column of the chart.

Independent Practice/Assessment:
-After the students recognize the differences, they will break into groups and find different
geometric shapes throughout the classroom. They will have ten minutes to document as many
shapes as they can.

Closure:
-Once the ten minutes are up, the students will present their objects by attempting to draw each
of the shapes they found on the SMARTBoard while describing the shapes characteristics.
-The end of the lesson will be a class discussion on what they now understand about the different
characteristics and why they have them.
