Introduction to 2 dimensional shapes June Meffert October 15, 2013 INTRODUCTION

2 dimensional shapes and their attributes 2.G.1- Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

LEARNING TARGETS (STUDENTS) I can identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. I can recognize and draw shapes based on their attributes.

ACTIVITY/PROCESS

First a quick review using daily calendar math whole class. Then students will write the I can statement in their math notebook. Smart board introduction of shapes and their attributes. Students will take notes in their math notebooks. I will model an example of a shape picture and how to record and name the shapes used in the bar graph. Students will now independently work and create their shape picture. I will pull small groups to the back table to help with their bar graphs. They will use their notes and bar graph form to record the shapes they used.

Smartboard activity shapes

Observation while students work. Listening for students to use the correct name for the different shapes. I will also be looking for students correctly fill in their bar graph.

Whole class revisit I can statements. Tell the students that today we looked at the shapes and their names. Tomorrow we will be looking closely at each shapes attributes. So the question I will close this lesson with will be, What are attributes?
