THE LEGEND OF MANANAWIN

Gihubad ni: Joan P. Roy

Long time ago, there was a place which is more like a forest. Every night, especially during
midnight, the people dwelling in that place hear chirping of birds. The sound of these birds is music to
their ears. They named the birds as Lawin.
These people love to hunt birds to provide food for their family. Each day, they will go to the
forest to hunt Lawin using bow and arrow.
One day, an old woman approaches a hunter and told him, Son, the first bird that you will
catch must be offered to the fairies of this forest, for they own this place. If you will do that you will be
able to catch more birds far than you wish. Then the old woman disappeared.
The hunter obediently followed what the old woman said. From that time on, they were able to
hunt many birds and they were all happy.
It was then that, the place was called Mana-Lawin which means lawin hunters. As the
time goes by Mana-Lawin becomes MANANAWIN.
