The specifics of Copyright and


fair use can be confusing.
There are many different rules
and details to decide if it is
General Legal Use, Fair Use, or
Illegal use.

Copyright
Copyright

is a law created which


protects authors works so no one can
steal their property.
It has to be completely your own and
original in order to be legal use.

Fair Use
Have

to be a teacher, students,
librarian, journalist to use a persons
work or property.
The purpose of usage has to be
educational, research, or scholarly.

General Legal Use


Created

yourself, reinvented
Have a license or direct permission
Purchase a work of any kind transfer it
to another device to use in classrooms.

Examples
Educators

can print out copies of a short


poem, parts of books, etc. for each
student to use in class
Educators can use whole books, essays,
photographs without using all of the
works by a certain artist or writer.

Illegal use
Using

an illegally obtained video, book,


art work, etc.
Using other teachers, friends, families
copies of anything in lectures.

Internet
Internet

and world wide web are


acceptable in the classroom setting.
Students and teachers may download
images from the internet to use for
lessons.
Audio and video may also be used in the
classroom.

Video
Educators,

students, librarians, news


organizations can use 10% or 3 minutes
of video (whichever comes first) of
someone else's work and still be legal.
Use has to be temporary.
Copies are made only under certain
circumstances.

Music
Only

10% of a copyrighted composition


can be used by educators.

Illustrations and Photographs


Educators

can use up to 5 whole works


by a single artist but no more.
Or 15 images or 10% (whichever comes
first) of a whole collection.
