Introduction and Philosophy

Chinese music is a very unique form of music that is not looked at or appreciated in
America. The unique attributes of Chinese music that are very distinct to the culture really bring
out the music and its taste. It is important that in music programs, Chinese music is addressed
and discussed about. Chinese music can be traced back 7,000-8,000 years and the instruments
that are used to create this music can be traced back that long as well. These instruments are not
seen very often, or at all in American music and this experience for the students will allow them
to better understand the greater variety that is out there.
It is also very important that the students begin to understand that there is lots of music in
the world other than American music. They need to learn to broaden their musical knowledge to
outside the norm and to figure out why this music is important. Also, the rich history of China
and its role in the world today can be seen in the music they listen to and making this connection
will help solidify past and present information.

Learner Analysis
This course will be implemented at Council Rock High School South in Holland,
Pennsylvania which is located in Bucks County. The total number of students enrolled in the 912 high school is 2000. The second highest represented demographic behind white/Caucasian
students are Asian Americans. Holland is 97% White, 1% African American, 2% Asian or
Pacific Islander and 1% other. The class will consist of students from grades 11-12 and the class
size will be 19 students. I will be seeing this class 3 times a week as per the cycle of the school
schedule.
Council Rock South is part of the Council Rock School District and the only other high
school in the district is Council Rock High School North. The median price of a home is
308,800 and the median house size is 1,904 Sq. ft. Based on this information, I am led to believe
that the families in the district make above average income.
The students are taught Kodaly and Orff from an early age and overall the district has
very high literacy skills and high test scores. The district has a high emphasis on success from
an early age.
