The Roman Republic Augustus and the Roman Empire

Overview/Rationale:
In this lesson, I will introduce Emperor Augustus and the Pax Romana.
Enduring Understanding:
Students will acquire knowledge about one of the most important Empires in the world
and be able to identify which features of the Empire contributed to its prosperity.
Goals and Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the differences between the Roman Republic and the
Empire.
Students will examine the role that Emperor Augustus played on Roman prosperity.
Standards (Correlation with PA Core):
CC.8.5.11-12.C.Evaluate various explanations for actions or events and determine which
explanation best accords with textual evidence, acknowledging where the text leaves
matters uncertain.
CC.8.5.11-12.G.Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in
diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to
address a question or solve a problem.
CC.8.5.9-10.I.Compare and contrast treatments of the same topic in several primary and
secondary sources.

PowerPoint presentation
Graphic organizer
Procedures:
Opener:
I will begin by going over student responses from the previous days lesson: Was Caesar
a hero or a tyrant?
Body of the Lesson:
Introduction of changes via PowerPoint
Show short video about Augustus, the Pax Romana and early emperors 2x
The second time I show the video, I will pause it to emphasize certain points that students
are to note down in their notebooks using the model Ive provided on the board
Whole class discussion guided by questions.
Closure:
I will end the lesson with a summation of what we have learned about the Roman Empire

Accommodations/ Intervention / Enrichment:


Students with a documented need through an IEP and or 504-service agreement will be given the
accommodations necessary for them to complete this assignment. This includes, but is not
limited to access to less complex, yet parallel readings, preferential seating and extended time.
ELL students will been given additional time to read the articles using their translators as needed.
Additionally, I will circulate throughout the room assessing student progress and ensuring that all
students have a thorough understanding of the assignment and expectations.
Summative Assessment/Evaluation: During the lesson I will keep track of who is who is
participating in the whole class discussion.
