Name of Activity: Animal Fun
Safety needs to be addressed when jumping over
objects.
Set up 4 stations prior to start of class.
At the first station, scatter poly spots (lily pads) on the ground and have the students pretend to be frogs jumping at a low level. The students have to get across the pond while only jumping on the lily pads. If they fall off or land in the pond they are to get up, shake the water off and continue on. At the second station, set up dome cones (giant rocks) to jump over at a medium level. Tell the students they are kangaroos that have to jump across the desert by jumping over the rocks. At the third station, randomly place cones (trees and bushes) throughout the activity space. The students are to pretend they are rabbits and have to scurry across the field, weaving in and out of the bushes. They will be jumping at a low level and at a fast pace. At the fourth station, set bowling pins (x2 foam bowling pins with a yardstick between [like hurdles] works great) in a scattered position throughout the activity area. The students will pretend to be gazelles and will leap over the obstacles at a high level. When they finish all 4 stations the students leap back to the beginning and repeat the station activity Assessment Ideas: * An easy-to-understand worksheet having students identify which animals jump at each level* a teacher checklist to use while the students are participating in the activity - focusing on the takeoff, flight or landing At the end of this activity ask the children to feel their heart rate and to say what they noticed, if there was a difference and what it is. Teaching Hints
Students will listen to song while walking in a
circle and listening for instructions. Instruct hold hands in a circle. Once they are all linked up ask them let go of their friends hands and to take three huge steps back to create their own personal space. Remind them to make sure they have enough personal space so they won't accidentally hurt a friend. Start song and begin walking in a circle around the students and instruct them to follow your direction. As the song plays ask the students what sounds the different animals make. Song will be played twice in accordance to the amount of time left in class.
