What was the Controversy?

There were a lot of

controversial
scenes/sequences
throughout the game that
present many challenging
thoughts and opinions in the
media.

Necrophilia

Do you think the controversy was justified?

To an extent. There are a lot of questionable
scenes in the game, depicting different types
of horrors that could leave a lasting
impression. Unlike most horror games, this
one gives each of the antagonists serious
character. Leaving notes around and giving
their characters a ton of detail and
background into their history, showing their
good sides and making you pity them. The
way it humanizes them makes it more
terrifying when theyre after you, because
they feel like real people. In doing so, it
makes all of the horror sequences that much
worse. what also add to the horror is a
sense of claustrophobia, this happens quite
a lot in the game as in many cases you have
to hide from your pursuers and sometimes
the only way to get away is in a closet.

Rape and Castration

Another very controversial scene takes place in

a room filled with the bodies of mutilated and
tossed away brides.
The cutscene shows the mutilation of a mans
foreign parts as a character called Edward
Guskin, otherwise known as The Groom,
forcefully attempts to turn you into his wife.
It is shown before and after your operation
what Guskin does with his victims after the
surgery.

He ties them up and hangs them after
having his way with them.

Cannibalism
In this scene we see the Cannibal
stuff a corpse into a microwave and
burst his head. After, he
acknowledges you and says Dont
you look at us! We love each other.
Hes mine! As you leave the room, he
leaves through another door, and you
end up in a chase sequence where
he follows you with his saw and puts
you in an incinerator. furthermore this
doesn't end here as the cannibal will
chase you until you reach the next
facility where he can't get through.

Realistic Violence/Nudity

Here we can see Guskin

killing one of his wives for not
bleeding less during the
operation. Once hes finished
with him, youre next.

Someone forced weights

Among the many controversial
scenes in the game, this one is the
icing on the cake.

What was the PEGI Rating?

The PEGI rating for Outlast was 18. This is due to blood, intense violence,
nudity, sexual themes, strong language, and extreme violence against
defenceless people (the player).

Were there cuts/bans imposed?

Outlast was banned in six countries. It is still not available for purchase in
India, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, and UAE. This was due to the grim,
and realistic nature of the gameplay. There were cuts and additions made after
they had people play the demo at events like E3. The cuts were made in places
where the violence displayed was too brutal, and too realistic. The original
demo had a completely different set of lighting throughout the environment, the
color scheme was changed but it was far brighter, so you could see everything.
In order to keep the game as frightening as it was, they changed the brightness
and color scheme to a dark green, shadow filled environment. In removing the
more horrific scenes from the original game, they lessened the impact of the
fear. They changed the overall lighting effect and environment to create tension
and fear for the player, taking place of the fear instilled in the older scenes.

What do the critics think?

o Outlast simultaneously reminds me of the grainy slasher flicks of the
70s, the gruesome body horror of Clive Barker, and gratuitous
modern torture porn.

What does the audience think?

Thats terrifying
If someones finds the gore or nudity excessive, Ive got a simple solution.
Dont play the game.
Most disturbing graphic video game scenes
Wasnt there like, decapitated necrophilia in this game? This game is
known to be pretty fucked up. Not sure why people are flipping out over

this.
