Essential Question: What preparations must one take to become a athletic trainer?
Working Thesis: Athletic trainers are not limited to working for schools and treating athletes,
but many trainers work with clients of all ages in workplaces such as in physicians offices,
branches of the military, or fitness and educational centers.
Refined Thesis: Job opportunities for upcoming athletic trainers are rising due to the increase in
injuries, specifically concussions; these trainers can find those jobs in fields including in
physicians offices, branches of the military, or fitness and educational centers.
Kozlowski, James. "Concussion Training Lacking in Federal Civil Rights Claim." 10 Oct. 2014:
29-35. Print.
In this article it is discussed that personal liability for negligence should be an
expectation, rather than a rule.(Kozlowski 29) The article explains how it is one of the many
duties as an athletic trainer to inform and educate any students participating or planning to take
part in a sport. The article shows that not only must the athletes be educated about how
concussions occur, but also must be taught about what are the possibilities of trying to play
through the concussion. This article is relevant to the thesis because it discusses how there is
not enough training for trainers pertaining to concussions.

Rast, Pam. "Demand for Trainers Grows as Injuries Rise." 2 Feb. 2015: 28.
This article talks about a multitude of subjects dealing with trainers. The article reports of
how as injuries, such as concussions, rise within sports at all levels there is also an increase in the
number demanded for athletic trainers. The article further explains the education and salaries of
athletic trainer in states similar to Texas. The article also explains that male athletes are not the
only ones at risk of injuries. In both sports, soccer and basketball, females suffer from more than
males do playing the same sports.(Rast 28) This article is relevant to the thesis because it shows
that all people, whether a boy or a girl, are at risk of injuries while playing a sport, and the article
also shows that because of the increase in sports related injuries there is a growing need for
athletic trainers.
Vilorio, Dennis. "More than Play: Three Careers in Sports." 56.2 (2012): 2-11. ERIC. Web. 13
Mar. 2015.
We are always on the lookout for potential injuries, says Charlie Thompson, head of
athletic training at a university in Princeton, New Jersey.(Vilorio 5) The journal discusses some
of the responsibilities, such as always being prepared to treat any type of injury that may occur,
of trainers. The journal also discusses times of availability of athletic trainers and steps trainers
take in order to prevent athletes from getting injured. This journal is relevant to the thesis
because it explains what an athletic trainer is, what a trainer does, and some of the qualifications
that required to become an athletic trainer.
