Project: Equations vs. Inequalities

Due: ________________
Purpose: In class, we have gone over a LOT of different types of equations and inequalities.
How can we keep all of them straight in our heads?! Aaahhh
This project will ask you to compare equations and inequalities side-by-side to discover
similarities and differences between the two. Plus, you get to create your own problems!
Assignment:
Use colored pencils/markers to make your project colorful! Do drafts on your own paper first.
Be creative when creating your own problems! (Consider putting variables on both sides, having
distribution, combining like terms, etc.)
*Challenge: Create word problems to translate into mathematical equations/inequalities.
Part I: One Variable

Part II: Two Variables

For each equation or inequality:

For each equation or inequality:

1. Create your own problem. Follow

the requirements listed below, but
other than that, be creative!
2. Solve the problem you create.
3. Draw a graph of the solution.
4. Explain how you got your answer.
1-Variable Equation:
Write your own equation that has one
variable and takes at least two steps to solve.
1-Variable Inequality:
Change your equation into an inequality by
replacing the equal sign with an inequality
sign.
At the bottom of the page, write one
similarity and one difference that you notice
between the equation and inequality. It can
be something about the process of solving or
graphing.

1. Create your own problem. Follow

the requirements listed below, but
other than that, be creative!
2. Draw a graph of the solution.
3. Explain how you drew your graph.
2-Variable Equation:
Write your own equation that has two
variables.
*Challenge: Write one that is not in
slope-intercept form.
2-Variable Inequality:
Change your equation into an inequality by
replacing the equal sign with an inequality
sign of your choice.
At the bottom of the page, write one
similarity and one difference that you notice
between the equation and inequality (about
the process of solving or graphing).

*Use your notes, homework, and textbook to help you!
