: In Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Shakespeare displays love and
mate ee unfair. For example, even though Lysander and Hermia love each other they
are forbidden by Egeus to be married. Likewise, Demetrius loves Hermia and is given —
permission to marry her, but he is charmed by fairies to love the woman he hates, Helena
ultimately denying him from his love. In addition, Helena loves Demetrius strongly, but
is despised by him, to the point where he even threatens her by saying, “I'll run from thee
and hide me in the brakes, And leave thee to the mercy of wild beasts.(II.1.233-234)”
Likewise, Shakespeare also displays unfairness of love and marriage through use of
Dolan’s statement of marriage changing “from a practical arrangement to a regulate
sexuality,” during Act I Scene I where Egeus brings in Hermia with Demetrius and
Lysander, trying to marry Hermia with the olden way of practical marriage, with
Demetrius representing the practical way of marriage, in this case money, and Lysander
representing the newer for of marriage, regulation of sexuality, because he and Hermia
want to marry because of their love. Clearly, in William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer
Night's Dream” love and marriage is displayed as unfair with the denial of Lysander and
Hermia’s marriage, and the love-hate relationship of Helena and Demetrius.
