Comprehension Skill: Persuasion

To persuade someone is to convince them to think or act in a certain way.


Good readers think about the authors goal: What does the author want me to think?
What is his/her message? How is the author using language to make me think this way?

Vocabulary Skill: Using a Dictionary

Dictionaries provide all of the different definitions for a word; some words have multiple
meanings that are different parts of speech.
Good readers use context to determine which definition matches the word as its used in
a particular sentence.
Example:
Please blend the ingredients together to make a smoothie. (blend is a verb)
Florida Georgia Lines music is a perfect blend of country, pop, and rock. (blend is a
noun)

Grammar: Transitions

Transitions connect sentences and help readers see the relationship between ideas.
Examples:
Time order: first, next, then, last, finally, also, later, while
Begin the conclusion of a paragraph/article/essay: in conclusion, to sum up, as a
result, so
