Executive Functioning?

A definition
Executive functions are a set of
processes believed to have to do with
managing oneself and ones resources
in order to achieve a goal. It is an
umbrella term for the neurologicallybased skills involving mental control
and self-regulation (Cooper-Kahn and
Dietzel, 2008).

Ability to stop ones own behavior at
an appropriate time
Includes thoughts and actions
Opposite is implusitivity

Shift
Ability to move freely from one
situation to another
Flexible thinking

Emotional Control
Ability to modulate emotions

Initiation
Ability to begin a task independently
Ability to independently generate
ideas, responses or problem-solving
strategies

Working memory
Capacity to hold information in ones
mind for the purpose of completing a
task

Planning/Organization
Ability to manage current or future
task demands

Organization of Materials
Ability to impose order on work,
plan and storage spaces

Self Monitoring
Ability to monitor ones own
performance
Ability to measure ones own
performance against a standard
