Presentation: The Administration of Insulin by Novolin Pen

Before beginning the Presentation: Write objectives/outcomes on the

Flip Chart: (see below)

At the end of todays lesson, PSW students will be able to:

Identify the Novolin Pen/Cartridge/Needle

Discuss the purpose of using a Novolin Insulin Pen
Demonstrate how to safely administer Insulin by a Novolin Pen

Presentation:
BRIDGE IN: I would like each of you to imagine that you have just
come off the highest roller coaster at Canadas Wonderland. You are
presently experiencing:
nausea, dizziness, increased perspiration, and you are unsteady on
your feet
How do these symptoms make you feel?
Out of Control? Ready to Collapse? Ill?

OBJECTIVE: What you have just experienced are symptoms similar to

those people who have Diabetes and experience a low blood sugar or
glucose. This is known as a hypoglycemic reaction. There will be
times in your role as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) student and in
your future role as a PSW that you will care for diabetic patients who
experience such symptoms. Many of these people receive Insulin and
you will need to know how to administer this injection.

STATE OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES: as noted on flip chart

PRE-TEST:
Does anyone know of someone who uses a Novolin Pen to administer
Insulin?

Has anyone ever administered Insulin by an injectable Pen?

Does anyone know why using a Pen would be easier to use than a
syringe and a vial?
LEARNING (Input from me): (Questions may be asked during lesson)
SHOW: Insulin Pen
Cartridge

and

Needle

PURPOSE: To manage/stabilize blood sugar/glucose levels of diabetic

patients to prevent a reaction such as the one we discussed.

DEMONSTRATION: by me with student volunteer discuss sites of

injection, clean site with alcohol swab, inject at 90 degrees.

GUIDED PRACTICE: Students practice with equipment in pairs to

practice role of PSW/patient. I move around to assist and observe,
answer student questions. Share story with students re: mistaken for
DUI and charged, medic alert bracelets and education to police officers

POST TEST: (Checking for Understanding) During practice, will have

observed for correct/safe demonstration/technique by students and
their ability to answer questions to indicate to me whether or not
students understood lesson.

QUESTIONS TO ASK:
For what purpose would you administer Insulin?
What are two sites on the body where Insulin may be administered?
What must you do at the site before you inject?
At what angle is Insulin injected?

Reflections/Questions/Concerns

ASSESSMENT: You will be given more practice time in the lab next
week and will then be tested the following week. You will need to
safely demonstrate proper technique as you did today in order to
administer to patients in clinical placements with clinical teacher in two
weeks. For further review, please read notes on Blackboard course site
and your pharmacology textbook, pp. 81-86.

Thank you and have a good week.
