With close reference to the text, give reasons why the
event makes you feel this way. (2012) The event which makes me feel angry is when Richard Harwick runs away from his home. When his biological father had a fever and passed on, his mother married a reverend named Mr. Coldstone. Richard despised his stepfather and ran away from home because he could not stand to live together with him. This shows how Richard is a weak-willed person who did not try to understand or make amends with his stepfather, unlike the rest of the characters in this novel. He shirks his responsibility as a son and a brother. He looked for an easy way out and ran away to be a cabin boy on a ship. Secondly, Richard ran away without the consent of his family members and caused the downfall of their family. His mother spent a ludicrous amount of money to find him, which in turn caused Mr. Coldstone to be furious. Soon, his mother dies of heartbreak due to Richard's selfishness and Mr. Coldstone also dies in fury. Even his sister, Charlotte, was not spared from his escapade. She unwillingly married a rich man named Charles Devere whom she did not love, but out of love for her long lost brother, she persevered to gain money to continue looking for Richard. All of this hardships and death were caused by Richard's unwillingness to compromise with his stepfather. Last but not least, he never kept his promise to his father, who in his last breath, had told Richard to obey his mother's wishes. As a son, he should have kept his father's dying wish . He left his mother and sister behind to face Mr. Coldstone's wrath without a second thought about their wellbeing. He also indirectly caused the deaths of his mother and Mr. Coldstone in a domino-like effect. Based on the reasons substantiated, I believe that Richard's brief and destructive departure from his house is the event which sparks anger and criticism amongst fellow readers.
