students to express their learning of the information and keep them involved and
engaged.
Variability in Representation and Background Knowledge

Fireflies to the class from a big book. There is a classroom set of Fireflies books
for students to read a long with if needed and on the iPads there is a digital copy
as well.

English dictionary she leaves on her desk to help her with any words she needs
help with.
Variability in Action and Expression

the classroom set of Fireflies to read along with the teacher or they are allowed to
read with the digital copy on the iPad. For the worksheet given at the end of the
lesson, they are allowed to work alone or with a partner. Beverly works better
when she works alone so this gives her the option too.
4.2 Optimize access to tools and assistive technologizes Every student in the
class has a laptop and iPad available to them. Mike uses the iPad and
headphones to read him text on the worksheet. Beverly uses Kurzweil 3000 to
allow her to answer questions since she has no productive speech. Johanna has
a German to English dictionary and also on the iPad there is a translator for her.
Mike uses highlighter tape to highlight sentences in the book to help him keep
focused on the words and helps him read.

loud and say The author just gave us important information about the setting of
the book. Remember, setting is when and where a story takes place. The author
says it is summer, and it is evening. That tells us when the story takes place.
Then, the author writes that the boy is looking through the open window to the
backyard. Thats where the story takes place. I wonder whose backyard it is. The
read pages 2-3 out loud and ask the students some questions, What is in the
backyard? Whose tree house is it? So, whose backyard is it? What did the
boys see over by the fence? Then continue to read the story like that, asking
questions every couple of pages to keep the students engaged and thinking.
