VARIABILITY
With a wide variety of learners in the classroom, each student learns and shows
what they learn differently. This lesson provides several different ways for the
students to express their learning of the information and keep them involved and
engaged.
Variability in Representation and Background Knowledge
1.1 Offer ways to customizing the display of information The teacher is reading
Fireflies to the class from a big book. There is a classroom set of Fireflies books
for students to read a long with if needed and on the iPads there is a digital copy
as well.
2.4 Promote understanding across languages Johanna has a German to
English dictionary she leaves on her desk to help her with any words she needs
help with.
Variability in Action and Expression
4.1 Vary the methods for response and navigation Students are allowed to use
the classroom set of Fireflies to read along with the teacher or they are allowed to
read with the digital copy on the iPad. For the worksheet given at the end of the
lesson, they are allowed to work alone or with a partner. Beverly works better
when she works alone so this gives her the option too.
4.2 Optimize access to tools and assistive technologizes Every student in the
class has a laptop and iPad available to them. Mike uses the iPad and
headphones to read him text on the worksheet. Beverly uses Kurzweil 3000 to
allow her to answer questions since she has no productive speech. Johanna has
a German to English dictionary and also on the iPad there is a translator for her.
Mike uses highlighter tape to highlight sentences in the book to help him keep
focused on the words and helps him read.
6.3 Facilitate managing information and resources This lesson uses a graphic
organizer for students to record events in the story. Beverly has a schedule on
her desk for each day to keep her on track.
Variability in Engagement
7.3 Minimize threats and distractions Beverly has a Board-Maker schedule she
leaves on her desk to keep her in the class routine. Mike uses his headphones
and iPad to read him text on the worksheet to keep him from being distracted
from the rest of the class. The entire class is given the options to use the class
set of books, their iPads or just read with the teacher so that they are able to pick
which method works best for them and is less distracting.
