COAST LIVE OAK

Evergreen oak that stays green throughout the year
Grows mostly along the shores of California ( San
Francisco to Baja California)
Grows in Coastal Plains and hills
Faces many pest such as fungi, beetles, and
leafhoppers
Grows best in deep moist soil
Adapts to fire well
Young oak trees adapt better than mature oak trees
Deep sustaining root systems help it survive

EUCALYPTUS
Originally from Australia
Leaves of the eucalypts have a thick waxy coat and are
hanged vertically in order to expose less to the hot sun
Are very adaptable to fire
Negative and positive effects on the environment
Great for medicine use

COMPETITION BETWEEN SPECIES

Both trees survive fire
Disease affecting oak tree
Resource competition between trees is fierce

HYPOTHESIS: SUPPORTED OR REFUTED?

Hypothesis: Although the two species are similar in various ways, we
have concluded the Eucalyptus (exotic species) will eventually
overpopulate the Coast Live Oak (native species) through resource
consumption and outside factors.
Our hypothesis was SUPPORTED based on our research.
Resource Consumption: Similar Traits with Each Other
Outside Factor: Cancer Disease from a Tiny Burrowing Beetle.
1. Problems for Organism
2. Fuel for Unwanted Wild Fire
