Big Ideas:

What were the major motivations and contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen, 442 nd Regimental Combat Team, Navajo
Code Talkers, and women during World War II?
Unit Goals and Objectives:

In this unit students will:

Students will identify the wartime contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen, 442 nd Regimental Combat Team,
Navajo Code Talkers, and women in the U.S.
Students will compare and contrast the motivating factors of each of these groups through the creation of a
Graphic Organizer.
Students will synthesize their knowledge of the motivations and contributions of these groups through roleplaying and writing.

Unit Summary:

Students will identify the contributions and compare the motivations made by three specific American minorities and women during
World War II. This will be accomplished by focusing on the Tuskegee Airmen, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Navajo Code
Talkers, and also on the significance of women in the workforce within the U.S. Students will read and listen to interviews, online

articles, and military communications. Students will be assessed through the use of flash cards and Graphic Organizers. Their
understanding of all concepts will be assessed in the form of a written essay and a letter where students take on the role of a
young American in World War II.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
1. Flash Cards: Students will use flash cards
(through quizlet) to gauge their understanding
of upcoming concepts while also familiarizing
themselves with key content-specific
vocabulary.

1. Webercise: Through online research in


content-specific websites, students will
complete a worksheet that identifies the
contributions of each of the groups.

1. Essay: Students will write an essay


reflecting your understanding of the
contributions of each group. For each special
fighting group, you will provide at least two
examples of contributions and detailed
descriptions of why those contributions were
significant.

2. Guided Notes: Students will listen to and


view a presentation about civil rights in the
1940s and expand on their knowledge about
the contributions of each of the groups.
Understanding will be reflected through the
completion of a Guided Notes sheet.
3. Graphic Organizer: Students will create a
graphic organizer (using Popplet) that will
compare and contrast the motivations of each
of the groups.
4. Quiz: Students will complete a quiz that
uses quotes from each of the groups that will
reflect their understanding of their
motivations.

2. Writing Home: Students take on the role


of a Tuskegee pilot, female factory worker,
Navajo Code Talker, or private in the 442nd. In
2-3 pages, students will write a letter home
that details at least two accomplishment
theyve been a part of. The letter will also
include a detailed description of the students
motivations.
