Euthanasiaisthepainlessdeathofaperson,donebyamedicalpractitioner,who
administersadrugtoendthesuffering,painlessly,butiseuthanasiaagoodchoice?Thisconcept
hasbeenaroundforcenturies.Firstrecordedin500B.C.,supportedbytheAncientRomansas
wellastheGreeks,itendsthe
suffering
ofaterminallyillpatient(Dowbiggin).Howeverthis
processhasbeenoutlawedinmanystates,mainlyduetomoralproblems.Themainproblemis,
theideathateuthanasiacouldbeconsideredmurder.However,thisjustsimplyisnotthecase,in
allcasesofeuthanasiatheentirefamilyisinvolvedinthedecisiontoendthepatientssuffering.
The
passingaway
ispainless,thepatientorthefamilyconsents,twodoctorsweighin,andthis
isavoluntaryoption.Itisnotinanywaymurder.
RecentlyBelgiumextendedtherightofeuthanasiatochildren,thelawpreviouslyonly
allowedforadultstobeeuthanized.Thereisasharpuprisingsayingthateuthanasiashouldnot
beanoptionforanyone.DieWelthasstatedthatthismovementwillmakeBelgiumbecomea
failingnationbyallowingeuthanasiatobepracticed(Bartunek).Ifthepatient,especially06

London,thewriterdescribestheirfeelingtowardseuthanasia.Theydeveloptheclaimthat
doctorsshouldbelookingathowtocarrylifeoutlongerratherthanfindingwaystoendit(Life
istoPreciousforLawmakerstoAssistEndingit).Theissuewiththisstatementisthatdoctors
havealwaysbeentryingtodevelopthebestcareforpatients.However,thelimitationsofscience
andmedicineholdbackcarefortheterminallyill.
OregonistheoneofthestatesinAmericatoallowapatienttoendtheirsuffering,without
euthanasia.TheDeathActallowsOregonresidentstherighttodie,iftheyhaveaserious
condition.Doctorsprescribemedication,butdoesnotadministeritthemselves.Thepatienttakes
theprescriptionandpassesaway(WhatistheOregonDeathWithDignityAct?).Thisshowsthat
theUnitedStatesisonestepcloserindemonstratingitsopennesstotheconceptofeuthanasia.
Itisclearthatthechoiceofeuthanasiaishelpfulwhenitcomestoendingthesufferingof
theterminallyill.Itisdisappointingtoknowthatsomanypeopleareintodaysworldsuffering
andtheycouldputanendtoit.Societymustrethinkeuthanasiaandrealizethatitis
imperative
tocreatelegislationthatwillmakeeuthanasialegal.
