A.1. Purpose and general description of project activity

The proposed project activity will be implemented in the fertilizer manufacturing facility of Indian Farmers
Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO) in Orissa. The facility includes a Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP)
plant, phosphoric acid plant, and sulphuric acid plant. The proposed project activity would be implemented
in the sulphuric acid manufacturing facility of IFFCO.
Purpose of the Project Activity
Sulfuric acid manufacturing from SO3 is an exothermic process. The heat carried by the sulphuric acid
circuit in the absorption towers of the sulphuric acid plant, is transferred to cooling water and released to
the atmosphere through cooling towers in the pre-project scenario. The purpose of the project activity is to
recover the waste heat that is released to the atmosphere from the final sulphuric acid stream, and to use it
for generation of LP steam.
The recovery of the waste heat will be carried out using the Heat Recovery System (HRS), which would be
installed at the SO3 absorption circuit of the sulphuric acid plant. The purpose of the absorption towers is
to absorb SO3 from the process gas into the circulated sulfuric acid stream. The absorbed SO 3 gas is
converted to sulphuric acid in an exothermic reaction leading to generation of heat. The technical
description of the absorption process and the project activity equipment is detailed in section A.4.3.
Pre-Project Scenario:
In the pre-project scenario, HP steam was let down to generate LP steam for meeting the process
requirements. The HP steam was generated using a coal fired AFBC boiler. The baseline scenario would be
the continuation of the pre-project scenario.
Post Project Scenario:
The LP steam is produced using the HRS, thereby partially displacing the requirement of HP steam which
was being let down in the pre project scenario. Therefore, the project activity reduces the consumption of
coal for producing HP steam.
The project activity would assist in achieving sustainable development of the host country. As per the
