notthoughtofitthatway.Hewasonewiththecommunity.Racismandsegregationaffects
innocentcitizensofMaycomblikeTomRobinson,Calpurnia,andScoutFinch.
Oneofthecharactersinthenovel,TomRobinson,isfalselyaccusedofacrimesolely
becauseofhisrace.HeisanegromanthatisaccusedofrapingMayellaEwell.Therealtruthis
that,thatneverhappened,andTomonlyhadonegoodhandinthefirstplace.Hewasforcedto
gototrialandattheendofthetrial,Tomissenttoprisonfordoingabsolutelynothingwrong
exceptbeingblack.Hetriedtoescapeand[then]theygothimjustaswenttothefence

shedecidedtotakethekidstoherchurch.OnememberofthechurchgaveCalahardtimejust

becauseshebroughtJemandScout,whoarewhite.Calstandsupforherchildrenduringasmall
fightandshesetsthetonewith,Whatyouwant,Lula(158).Thesignificanceofthisquoteis
veryimportantbecauseitshowshowCalwasprotectiveofherkidseventhoughshewasbeing
insulted.ReverendSykes,thepastorthere,madesurethatJemandScoutwerewelcometoa
coloredfolkchurch.EvenpeoplejustlikeCalaregivinghersomehardtimes.Racismwas
tearingpeopleapart,butCaldidanexcellentjobofprotectingherchildren.EventhoughCalhas
averylittleinvolvementwithracism,thissituationwasabigeventofpeopleofthesame
ethnicitiesturningagainsteachother.
EvenScout,whoiswhite,hadsomeracialissuesinherownfamilyjustbecauseAtticus
wasdefendingTomRobinsonduringthetrial.Inthebeginningofthenovel,Scoutisgetting
calledaracialtermandlover.EvenherownfamilymemberwasinsultingAtticuswiththeuseof
thisphrase.EverybitofthenamecallingwasfromAtticushelpingTomRobinson.Scoutfeels
insultedanddisgustedwhenFrancis,...calledHesnothingbutan[aughtyword]lover(110).
ThiseffectsScoutbecauseitisuseddirectlytowardsAtticus.WhenFrancisinsultedAtticus,
Scoutgrewfuriousandpunchedhiminthemouth.ThisevenshowsthatScoutwasprotectiveof
Atticus,herownfather.Scoutisveryupsetwithherfamilyandisinsultedwhenitisdirectedat
Atticus.ThisshowsthatnotalloftherelationsarestrongintheFinchfamilywhenitcomesto
segregation.
Racismwasaveryunfairthingduringthetimeofthestory.Peoplewereslavesandit
waslegal.Duringthegreatdepression,therewasnoCivilRightsMovementthatwouldhave
madethesmalltownofMaycombnotsegregated.Namecallingwasthemostinsultingthingthat
happenedinthisbook.Itwaseverywhere.RacismhasalwaysaffectedpeopleBothinthe1930s,
