    racisttowardsislamicsandotherpeoplefromthatpartoftheworld.Inthebook

    byHarperLee,weseeracismaswellyetitisdirectedtowardsAfricanAmericans.
    ThetownofMaycomb,AlabamahasaverydeeprootedbeliefthatAfricanAmericansarelower
    thanwhitepeopleare.Racismhasaffectedmanypeopleinthetown,butmostaffectedareTom
    Robinson,Calpurnia,andScout.
    TomRobinsonwasaffectedbyracisminmanywaysdrastically.Nobodywoulddefend
    himinhistrialcasebecausehewasAfricanAmerican.OnlyAtticuswoulddefendhimbecause
    if[he]didnt[he]couldntholdup[his]headintown,[he]couldntrepresentthiscountryin
    thelegislature,[he]couldnttell[Scout]orJemtonotdosomethingagain(Lee100).Because
    Tomisablackman,nobodywillrepresenthimexceptoneman.Ifhewouldhavebeenwhite,he
    wouldhavehadmultiplelawyerstochoosefrom.Hisracemadeitalmostimpossibletofinda
    lawyer.TomRobinsonsfamilycouldntgetjobsbecausepeopledidntwanttobeassociated
    withhiminanyway.Becausehewasblackandconvictedofacrimehedidnotcommit,his
    familywaslefttofendforthemselveswithnojobsandnomoneytoprovidefortheirkids.Tom
    Robinsonwasalsoconvictedguiltyjustbecausehewasablackmanandtheyneededsomeoneto

    upayearago,andthereweremanyunknowndetailsaswell.Overall,Tomwasbombardedwith
    racismhiswholelife.
    TheFinchscook,Calpurnia,wasalsoaffectedbyracism.First,shehastocomeinthe
    backdoorbecauseofherrace.Whentherabiddogwaswalkingdownthestreet,sheracedover
    totelltheradleysandasscoutandjemwatchedscoutwhisperedshessupposedtogoaround
    inback(Lee124).Thisshowsthattheyweretreatedlowerandtheywerenotevenallowedto
    knockonthefrontdoor.Second,shechangedthewayshetalkedwhenshewenttochurch.She
    doesthisbecauseAfricanAmericansarenotsupposedtobeabletoreadandwriteandCalpurnia
    canandifeveryoneelseknewthatthentheywouldthinkshewasawhiteperson.Thisalso
    showsthattheymustnothaveschoolsandonlythewhiteshaveschools.Lastly,AuntAlexandra
    treatsCalpurnialikelowerclasswhenshefirstseesher.AsAlexandrastayed,shestillwould
    treatlikelowerclassbutnotasbadasbefore.Alexandracamefromaplantationwhichhaddeep
    rootedbeliefsthatAfricanAmericanswerelessthanpeoplesoshegrewupwiththat.Whenshe
    arrivedatthehouse,sheexpectedCalpurniatobelikethattoobutinsteadshefoundaneducated
    womanwhowaspartofthefamilyandidonotthinkshewasverypreparedforthat.Calpurnia
    hasseenandhasbeenabletoovercometheracismthrownather.
    AtticusFinchsdaughter,scout,hasalsobeenaffectedbyracism.First,shegetsintoa
    fightwithhercousinFrancisbecausehewascallinghernames.Hewouldmakefunofherso
    muchthatwhenshefinallysnappedshesplit[her]knuckletotheboneonhisfrontteeth(Lee
    112).ThisshowsthatevenfamilydisapproveswithAtticussdecision.Thisalsoshowsthat
    Scouthasatemper.Second,ScoutgetsmadefunofbyherneighborMrs.Dubose.Whenthey

    werelittle,theywerescaredtowalkpastherhousewithoutAtticus.Nowthattheyareolder,
    theyarebraveenoughtowalkpastbuttheygetyelledateverytime.OnedayJemfinallysnaps
    andgoesintoheryardandcutsoffthetopofallherflowersandbreaksScoutsbatoninhalf.
    Lastly,whenScoutandJemgotoCalpurniaschurch,onepersondoesnotwantthemtobethere
    becauseeverythingelseissegregated.Everyoneelseinthechurchthinksthattheyshouldcome.
    ThatonepersonmustbethinkingthatifAfricanAmericanscannotgointowhitepeople's
    buildingthenwhyshouldwhitepeoplebeabletogointoAfricanAmericansbuildings.Everyone
    elseinthechurchwasrespectfulandverynice.
    Inthebook,weseeracismmostlyaffectTomRobinson,Calpurnia,andScoutbutit
    affectseveryone.Overall,theracisminthisbookmeantthattherewasanunfairtrialandpeople
    weretreatedlessthannormalpeople.Whileinthispaper,weonlyseeracismaffectingthree
    people,racismcanbeseeneverywhere.
