Avoiding You in Essays


The use of you in formal writing is unclear for the reader because it
is too vague.
Readers need to know who the writer is specifically speaking about.
Replace you pronoun with who you are speaking about.

Vague:
When students first walk into high school, you often feel nervous.
Change to:
When students first walk into high school, they often feel nervous.
Vague:
o In the short story, the author shows you how some children have a
hard time starting Kindergarten.
Change to:
o In the short story, the author shows the reader how some children have a
hard time starting Kindergarten.
TIP: Replace you with the reader when writing about a book, poem, etc.
Vague:
You should not judge others before getting to know them.
Change to:
Clearly, one should not judge others before getting to know them.
TIP: Replace with one when talking about people in general
