Writing Prompt
There are many short stories that people might love to read and how setting leads to
theme so readers can get the interest of the book they are reading. Authors use setting to create
themes in literature as illustrated in the following works. The Sniper, Exile, The Cast of
Amontillado, The Most Dangerous Game, Girl in Hyacinth Blue
The short story Exile by Julia Alvarez is a story about a young girl that lives in the
Dominican Republic and goes to the Untied States to live her dream of being from a dictator in
there country. It says in the short story lived in New York City. Then it says in the story that
We stood awhile moving at America both of us trying hard to feel luckier than we felt both of
us.(Alvarez258) In this short story the theme is always be prepared for anything and what mean
is that you should stay prepared always.
In the short story The Sniper by Liam OFlaherty the setting is on a rooftop and the
street. On a rooftop near OConnell Bridge (OFlaherty212) The theme of this short story
is to think before you act what that mean think about before you act.
In the short The Cast of Amontillado in the short story the setting was in Italy then it
was in the palazzo. Stood upon the clamp ground of the catacombs of the Montrears. (poe85)
It was about dusk on evening during the supreme madness one of the carnival season.
(poe84) the theme of this short story is to never trust everybody what means is to never people
that do wrong things.
In the next short story is The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell in the story
the setting was in the Caribbean, the ship, the yacht; Trap Island and the Jungle But even you
cant see four miles or so through a moonless Caribbean night. (Connell 25) the theme is for
this story is expecting the unexpected who that means to be aware at all times.

The last short story is The Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland the setting takes in
Cornelius house in the foiling works. During a winters first snowfall just like this.
(Vreeland2) I dont usually have guests, he explained and directed me to sit in the one easy
chair, plum-colored leather high backed and expensive, next to the fireplace and opposite of a
painting. (Vreeland4) The theme of this short story is a certain object can have as special
meaning to people in different ways.
