Reading Lesson

Story Characters
Duration- 90 minutes
Objectives
1. Student will be able to provide at least three descriptive
characteristics of any character in a story.
2. Student will be able to identify a sequence of events in a story.
3. Student will be able to explain how the characters affect the
sequence of events in the story.
Standards
R.L.3.3- Describe characters in a story (e.g. their traits, motivations, or
feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of
events.

Scott Foresman Reading book
Characters
Poster Board
Sequence of Events
Markers
Pencil and Paper
Procedure
1. (10 mins) Read the short story The King In The Kitchen from the
Pearson Scott Foresman Reading Book to the class.
2. Ask comprehension questions while reading about the sequence of
event and the characters in the story.
3. (10-15 mins) Use a KWL chart on the board with the class to discuss
the characters and events from the story.
4. (30-45 mins) After the whole class discussion have the students
break up into small groups of 3-4 students. Once the students are in
groups have them work together to create a comic strip or storyboard
for a story. Have them include pictures and descriptions of at least
three characters. Also have them create the comic or storyboard in the
correct sequence of at least 4 events for their story.
5. (20 mins) Once the groups are finished with the comic or storyboard
they will come up to the front of the class and present their story that
they created on the poster board.
6. (15 mins) After the presentations the students will work
independently on the reading passage and comprehension questions
worksheet.
7. (5 mins) Students will reflect what they learned from the lesson in a
journal entry.
