Eli Lopezs Lesson #1

Title: Rio de Janeiro ecology

Opening: Rio de Janeiro contains a huge population which means a lot of pollutant
in the city. The pollution from humans can harm animals such as fishes that that can
be hunted for aquaculture. As well as carnivores because then they wouldnt have a
source of food or can also be harmed from the pollution. Consumers that rely on
these animals being affected are not getting the nutrients they need in order to be
healthy because they are dying off. The communities of Rio de Janeiro are all
affected by the population as are human beings living in this city because then
people cant catch as many fish because theyre all dying off. The demography
shows how much the pollution has increased and as the population grows so does
the pollution in the area.
Objectives: Students will be assigned into ground and will walk around the beach
of Rio de Janeiro and observe the amount of pollution in the area. They then will
examine the animals around the pollution and the way they act around the trash,
writing all of their observations in their journals.
Material: Lab notebook, pencil, map, water, food
Background skills: Students will need to play close attention to small details they
see.
Procedure/Instructions:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Get into groups

Gather all of their materials
Walk to the beach together
Make observations

Classroom Management: Students cannot at any time come in contact with

animals. They must observe the animals from a far distance so they wont disturb
them.
Assessment: Students will be asked about their observations and what they think
about what they saw.
Homework: Each group will come up with three ideas that they can use in order to
help decrease pollution and maintain the beach and city clean.
Closure: By coming up with ideas they can be presented to the people of Rio de
Janeiro and help raise awareness of the pollution and how its affecting the
ecosystem of Rio de Janeiro.
