Studio Brief
The brief was to create a concept for an independant magazine that had a niche
subject considering the concept, audience, aesthetic, stratergy, lifespan and
progression. In collaboration with Collaboration - Sam Cook, Victoria Redmond,
Beth Dalzell, Jordan Harrison-Reeder.

Through research it was discovered that people love to read about other
peoples lives in a slightly voyeuristic manner. The magazine is a proposed
bi annual publication. This allows the content to be thoroughly researched
and considered. The magazine should be authentic and the stories and
interviews involved would be written by experiencing their life style.

Visual Research

Photography

Existing Publications

Antoine Bruys photography consisting of nature, colourful landscapes and

people within the off sight communities living off the earth was the imperative
influenced for the magazine cover.

Looking into publications that represented similar topics to Off The Grid,
generated natural tones of green and brown generated a sustainble approach to
the aesthetic of the magazine cover.

This imagery would provide the target audience with a visual representation of
what off the grid lifestyle is like and inform the of the habits in which they call
home.

The publications where heavily photography driven which was a signigying

aesthetic appraoch for the magazine, so that in would contextually and
aesthetically correlate with the purpose of the magazine.

Audience

Stratergy

The Off The Grid consumer is someone who appreciates the earth we live
on and has a taste for adventure. They spend their days growing their own
produce or want to find ways in maintaing a DIY lifestyle. However members of
the audience do not actually live off the grid, like the people featured in the
magazine, they are interested in the culture and the associated lifestyle.

Due to the nature and content National Geographic would be a sponsor or

associate for the magazine as they share the same ethos. The magazine is a
younger version of the compnay, that the audiences can grow up with and move
onto National Geographic as they get older.

Lifespan
The longevity of the magazine would last for 5-10 years due to the dfferent
communities around the world of people who live off the grid.

Campaign
Clips of people living Off The Grid like Mick Dodge would showcase on the
magazines website and TV adverts to show audiences how the other world live
and give an insight, which would grab their attention and want to find out more.

Design Decisions

Masthead
The magazine masthead was handrenderd and digitally constructed by Jordan
to give a crafted and personalised tone of voice. This was considered due to the
content being about people and the design had to correlate with this theme.
The masthead had to be transferable across digital and print platforms which
influenced the digital rendering of the type.

The masthead varies in monochromatic colours depending on the photography

used on the front cover.
Dimensions
The publication is at an A4 format to allow the photography to be seen at a larger
scale for the target audience as well as being apprpriate for readers on the move.

Layout

The magazine cover takes on a photographic driven cover to sythensis with the
content of the magazine.

The layouts within the magazine are heavily photography driven to visual express
the lifestyle of the Off The Grid community to give readers and understanding
about their life.

The full bled imagery has been incoroparted to highlight that the magazine is
about nature and the out doors.

Interviews and information about the life style are also incorporated within the
layouts using san serif type for legibility and to not distract away from the design.
