The Black Cat Script Section 3

Narrator:

Today we will be performing the third section of the black ct by Edger Allen
Poe. We hope you enjoy the reflections on the inward thoughts the narrator is
feeling while the story goes on

*Lights*
Man(Ali):

I Decided to visit the rubble. The ruble that used to be my home, my home that
*Motion to rubble at feet and around him*

used to be a comfortable safe place for me, and my wife and our cat.
*put hand around wifes shoulder*

Narrator:

The place that is now just as destroyed as my sobriety. As destroyed as my sanity.

Ive lost my sanity, Ive lost my cat, Ive lost my companion who I once loved.
But that friendship is destroyed too, I destroyed it slowly. All by myself. The wall
would have been charred like the rest of the houses remains. However it was not
like the rest. A crowd had assembled to examine its peculiarity.
*pushes wife roughly away, wife exits, act upset and frustrated with oneself*

Narrator:

The crowd expressed discomfort of how st range and singled out it was.

Crowd 1:

How strange

Crowd 2:

This is very peculiar

Crowd 3:

What is it?

Narrator:

And when I went to go look for myself I was set in a state of shock. There in front
of me was a gigantic figure, a gigantic figure of a cat. But it wasnt just of a cat, it
was of a cat with a rope around its neck. To the surrounding people, they might
not be seeing or understanding what it means to me. But I know, I understand my
own house, the house that used to be comfortable has turned into an eerie
wasteland that is pointing out my criminal act. *Act with the wall, gasp ect*

Man (Ali):
Narrator:

No one can know of that sin

NO one can understand why this walls image puts me into a blank state of mind.
I was filled with a strong sense of wonder and terror.

Man (Ali):

Who could know? How could they know? Am I over analyzing? If I dont feel
remorse, why is there a feeling rushing over me of guilt just by looking at this
image? *looks confused, runs fingers through hair, wife walks in, hand on shoulder*

Narrator:

Just looking at this image made me reflect what I had done. Just at the garden
adjacent to my now extinguished house the scene ran through my already clouded
mind. There is probably a justified explanation as to how that figure appeared in
my house. *Again confused maybe pacing*

Man (Ali): Perhaps, someone amidst the chaos of the fire saw the cat in the garden. Perhaps,
while the fire was distracting everyone they cut it down and discarded it into my
chamber. *crazy frantic movements throughout*
Narrator:

Yes, yes that is why there is a figure on the wall, how or why else would it be
there? I do not feel guilty; I have already proven that I dont feel remorse. My
conscience is crystal clear surprising as that may sound. Although evidence haunts
me, I have made myself superior over my act. It took time. The cat continually
visited my every thought, and that strange feeling returned when gazing upon the
horrendous figure on the wall, I regret the loss of the animal, that is why the
image appears like so, but that only means that what I have lost I will later gain.
*stands up straight as if in proclamation*

*Lights*
Narrator:

One evening while I was contemplating my actions in a bottle of rum, feeling a

deep sense of self-pity, a strange object caught my attention when my empty
bottles were being raddled out of the corner of my eye. I stared at it for an
extended period of time trying to decipher exactly what it could be. I came to the
conclusion that I would never find out unless I approached it only to touch it and
conclude that it was a black cat. *act out scene*

Man (Ali):

How strangely similar

Narrator:

A cat similar to Pluto, in fact so similar it was frightening how closely it

resembled him. There was one major difference between Pluto and this new cat;
there was a large white splotch on its chest that was strangely familiar. While
petting him, he was pleased and purred loudly as he rubbed against me as if he
fondly appreciated my attention. *however cat wants to act this out*

Man (Ali):

This is my gain from my loss!

Narrator:

This was the creature I knew I was going to have, I hurried to the landlord and
offered to purchase this new companion.

Man (Ali):

Sir, may I purchase this cat?

Landlord:

I have never seen the cat before.

Narrator:

I continued to caress it for a few minutes more then started on my way home and
looked back to see the cat promptly following after. He became very domestic
about the house and gained my wifes love and admiration immediately.

Wife:

Oh, how beautiful, who are you?

Narrator:

As time went on, I found myself becoming more and more distant to the animal
and soon disliked its company much like how I felt towards my prior cat. Its not
what I had anticipated, the reverse actually. In replace by what used to be
fondness towards it, I now feel annoyed and disgusted by its presence. *act*

Man (Ali):

I know not how or why it came to be, but slowly and patiently my feelings of
annoyance and disgust grew into stronger feelings of bitterness and hatred. *said to
audience*

Narrator:

Time seemed to swiftly pass by and within this time the hatred inside swelled up
until a punishment against the cat seemed fit because of the punishment it had
given me by imprisoning me in my own home. I now have a worked that I have
been feeling since my criminal act, loathing.
