As a Field Instructor/Lecturer at the University of Michigan, I have worked with Miss Christine Shay for the last nine months. During that time I have been able to observe her teaching in a third grade classroom. Additionally, I have seen Christine work with cohort members on various projects, and have observed her interactions with others in our seminar meetings. Christine consistently shows clarity and accuracy in effectively communicating directions and procedures during classroom instruction. Her lesson plans reflect knowledge of the subject being taught and understanding of district instructional guidelines. Her probing questioning techniques require students to move beyond simple responses toward a broader understanding of topics. She carefully charts student progress and uses this information to plan instruction tailored to each students needs. Christines classroom management techniques encourage respect for all students. By keeping the instruction engaging she is able to avert many disciplinary problems. When redirection is necessary, she uses subtle reminders delivered privately to the student needing the reminder. Christine relates well to all students. She is consistent in her expectations and holds high standards for all of her students. Christine is aware of the developmental stages of the students and plans activities that challenge and intrigue students at their level, encourages independent and creative solutions to problems/assignments. Christine incorporates technology into her lesson planning and presentation through the use of PowerPoint presentations, materials created on Word and the Blackboard Collaborative programs. Christine is reflective about feedback given to her by instructors, her classroom teacher and Field Instructor. She effectively uses feedback to structure new teaching/learning experiences. She maintains professional conduct in preparedness, attendance, and protects the privacy of her students. Without hesitation, I can recommend Christine Shay for an elementary teaching position. It has been a pleasure to work with her. Sincerely,
