Inner-city Townhomes to Solve Riverbank Erosion and Runoff into the Bow River
The Alberta Riparian Habitat Management Society (Cows & Fish) and the Alberta Low Impact
Development Partnership Society (ALIDP) have chosen the New Street Townhomes at 30-32 New St
SE in Inglewood as a demonstration site for a riparian riverbank planting project and a front yard rain
garden installation.
The riparian planting at the Bow River waters edge will prevent erosion, reduce ice damage, intercept
pollutants and provide crucial habitat for wildlife. says Cows & Fish rangeland specialist Amanda
Halawell.
This will also be the first rain garden demonstration site in Calgary by the ALIDP. Rain gardens are an
easy way to handle pollutants and the extra runoff generated by rooftops. Better downspout management
translates into reduced nuisance flooding in our communities, reduced pollution in our rivers, lakes and
wetlands, and reduced costs to taxpayers to deal with the consequences of these types of problems. And
rain gardens are a beautiful way to bring more moisture-loving plants into a water-wise garden. Says
Let van Duin, Executive Director of the ALIDP.
The planting event is expected to draw 20 volunteers from the neighbourhood and the rest of Calgary.
Dozens of plants are being provided by Cows & Fish for the riverbank riparian projects including many
native species.
Funding comes from the RBC Bluewater fund with overall project support from The Calgary
Foundation and Alberta Real Estate Foundation.
It will be a real hands-on demonstration workshop for the volunteers to learn about best practices for
riparian riverbank management. says Amanda Halawell.
The event is happening on Saturday May 23, 2015 from 10 am to 4 pm at the New Street Townhomes
30 32 New St SE in Inglewood. If the weather does not cooperate, the rain date is Saturday May 30.
