The Cult of Mao

1) This picture depicts China as

very happy, wealthy, and
successful. With overflowing
joy and abundance of food,
you are at awe with the
leader, the God, and the
saviour; known as Mao,
leader of China, whose
picture hangs in the back.
This image of propaganda
shows that Chinas leader is
able to provide them with
everything needed and more,
including nice clothing and
toys and decorations.

2) To support his image, Mao:

- Swam across the Yangste River so show dedication
- Mao openly and successfully sided with peasants
- He had ideas and plans, went through with them
- Used radical solutions for domestic weakness
- Had lots of knowledge in guerilla warfare
- Liberated the people from economic and social problems

3) Negative effects his actions had:

His plan of the Great Leap Forward ultimately failed

Ended with loss of fertile land
Famine was his fault
Responsible for deaths of upper class
Burnt books, ancient Chinese artifacts, and publically executed
scholars and intellectuals

4) Mao was responsible for more deaths than Hitler and Stalin, and Stalin &

Mao had communism in common. Since Mao was following Stalins

blueprint, I would say that he had more in common with him by trying to
rule the same way, but also he had a different vibe around him. He
seems to be easily compared to Kim Jong Il because of his cult of
personality and making himself seem like a God. In a way, Mao did a
better job with his reputation, leaving the fact that he killed more
people, because he tried to make positive changes by introducing the
Great Leap Forward and 100 Flower Campaign.
