LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2013-2015

ACTIVITY REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

ACTIVITY: S
ACTIVITY TOPIC:

Participate on a Collegewide committee

PARTICIPANTS NAME: Chris Hainsworth

1. What were the significant learning points in this activity?

I participated on the Work/Life Balance Task Force in 2009. This was my first
opportunity to participate on a Collegewide committee. I was part of the Self
subcommittee under Karen Stevenson. The charge of the sub-committee was to
investigate opportunities for personal challenge and growth that would facilitate
work/life balance and to make recommendations. My committee members and I
conducted research and provided some recommendations that were incorporated
into the Task Force report.
There were two aspects of this activity that stood out to me. The first was that even
though I never met my colleagues face to face, we were able to work effectively
together utilizing technology. The second was that the college was looking for ways
to strengthen and retain its workforce by seeking opportunities for balance. I have
always felt that an organizations employees are its most valuable asset and
potentially its most tenuous because the work environment and the ability to
maintain balance can make the difference between losing and retaining a good
employee. This task force told me that the College values the people working here.

2. Which leadership characteristics was were enhanced or learned through this

activity?
(Leadership Characteristic 7 and 19)
This helped enhance the characteristics of being a decision-maker and empowering
others. Our subcommittee chair guided us to conduct our research in a particular
direction and as committee members we brought some diverse ideas to the table.
We were empowered to seek ideas and when we brought our research to the table
all of the ideas were incorporated into the report in some manner.
