LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2013-2015

ACTIVITY REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

ACTIVITY: C
ACTIVITY TOPIC:

Serving on an Administrative Retreat Committee

PARTICIPANTS NAME: Chris Hainsworth

1. What were the significant learning points in this activity?

Serving on the 2015 Administrative Retreat Committee was one of the most
rewarding activities of the Leadership Development Program. I was a member of our
eight person committee. We were the first to have to first develop a topic for the
program and then build the program of presentations and activities. The topic that
we chose was critical/creative thinking. The program was structured so that the
attendees could first learn about their own thinking character using the Herrmann
Brain model, then learn about the psychology of how the brain works as we make
decisions, then learn about and use some creative thinking tools. It was a highly
interactive program that seemed to be well received.
What made this activity so rewarding for me was working with my colleagues to
develop and deliver a successful program. We were all very different as individuals
and these differences were used to strengthen the group because we were allowed
to play to our individual strengths. It was very interesting to see the ideas flow and
things begin to take shape. I think that the group dynamic was key to the success of
the retreat. Everyone was focused and worked toward the goal of delivering a quality
program with useful and relevant content for the Colleges administrators.

2. Which leadership characteristics was were enhanced or learned through this

activity?
(Leadership Characteristics 3, 6, 8, 15, 16, & 17)
The leadership characteristics that were enhanced through this activity was the
importance of having good interpersonal communication skills, maintaining dignity,
respect and fairness and having a sense of team spirit. I feel that the reason that we
became an effective group was that we all put these characteristics into practice. I
think that the reason that we executed this activity well is because, as a team, we
could all see the big picture, we followed through and we worked to make sure that
we got it right.
