UP killed in LPG fire

Chennai: Fourmembersof a
family, including two chil-
dren, were killed early on
Thursday in a fire triggered
by a leak from an LPG cylin-
der in Kodungaiyur.
The deceased were identi-
fied as Raj of Gorakhpur in
Uttar Pradesh, his sister-in-
law Anita, 25, niece Pooja, 7,
and 45-year-old nephew
Akash.
The family members
stayed in a small room.
“Around 4.30am we heard a
loud blast and rushed out to
see all the four sitting out-
side. We admitted them to
Government Kilpauk Medi-
cal College and Hospital,”
said Roopavathy a neigh-
bour.
All of them had suffered
70% burns. While, two
children and Raj died in the
afternoon, Anita died later in
the evening, hospital sources
said. Police said gas leaked as
Anita failed to close the regu-
lator of the LPG cylinder.
“Thefire was triggered when
Anita switched on the light,”
an investigating officer said.
By the time police arrived,
the house was filled with gas.
Raj and his brother Trilo-
ki had rented a house in the
area and sold samosas in the
neighbourhood, police said.
They kept the stove litalmost
throughout theday, an officer
said.
“We always suspected
there was a gas leak whenev-
er we crossed the house, but

Anita did not believe us,”
said Kalaivani, another
neighbour.
Triloki had left for their
hometown about 20 days ago
and the others were to leave
on Sunday. Their bags had
been packed, neighbours told
police. “We couldn’t believe
they were dead. The children
were desperately asking for
water as we were putting off
the flames,” said Manikan-
dan, another neighbour.
Triloki, who was in-
formed of the incident, is on
his way to the city, police
said. The Kodungaiyur po-
lice have registered a case.
