Brief Description of Lesson:


Using their previously created tea pot or pitcher, student will place a coating of
underglaze onto their vessel and then carve designs into it, exposing the white clay to
enhance the design.
Scope and Sequence (Ordered Flow of Lesson)
Day 1:
Students will be introduced to the scrimshaw technique through visual examples on the
projector using airplay and actual finished pieces.
Students will be instructed on the properties of clay in the greenware stage and shown the
process of scrimshaw by the teacher.
Day 2:
Students will be asked to plan their scrimshaw designs, then clean their greenware.
Students will place a coating of underglaze on their greenware.
Days 3-5:
Students will carve their approved design on their pottery.

Scaffolding as needed.
