History of Wireless Power

In

1899, Sir Nikola

Tesla Proposed a
method of Wireless
Power Transmission.
As it is in Radiative
mode, most of the
Power was wasted
and has less
efficiency.

The forgotten invention is reborn in

2007
The idea of wireless
electricity has been
around since the early
days of the Tesla coil.
But thanks to a group
of MIT scientists, team
led by Marin Soljai
and
named
it
"WiTricity"

There are 3 major types , each with different

ranges, methods of transfer
Short range: Inductive Coupling
Medium range: Resonant Induction
Long range: Electromagnetic Wave Power
Transfer

HOW DOES RESONANT

INDUCTION WORKS

Same principles as magnetic induction, but uses

resonance to increase the range.
Everything resonates at a certain frequency, based on
its shape and material.
Energy transfers easily between resonating objects.
With resonant induction, power is transmitted between
two resonating coils.

RESONANT MAGNETIC COUPLING

Magnetic coupling occurs when two
objects exchange energy through their
varying or oscillating magnetic fields.
Resonant coupling occurs when the
natural frequencies of the two objects are
approximately the same.

WiTricity Technology: The Basics

13

WiTricity

14

There are witricity power sources(transmitter) and

capture devices(receiver).
Power source provides power to the devices where as
capture device captured it to work.
Power source and capture devices are specially
designed strongly-coupled resonators for midrange
wireless non-radiative energy transfer

Witricity Features
Highly Resonant Strong Coupling Provides
High Efficiency Over Distance
Energy Transfer via Magnetic Near Field Can
Penetrate and Wrap Around Obstacles
Non-Radiative Energy Transfer is Safe for
People and Animals
Flexible Geometry Allows WiTricity Devices to
be Embedded Into Different Products

Benefits of witricity
It will make products :
More Convenient:
-No manual recharging or changing batteries.
-Eliminate unsightly, unwieldy and costly power cords.
More Reliable:
-Never run out of battery power.
-Reduce product failure rates by fixing the weakest link: flexing wiring and
mechanical interconnects.

16

More Environmentally Friendly:

-Reduce use of disposable batteries.
-Use efficient electric grid power directly instead of inefficient battery
Charging.

ADVANTAGES
Safe,

fairly efficient, good range

Boon for the devices which uses midrange power
No need of line of sight.
No need of power cables and batteries.
Magnetic fields interact weakly with biological
masses (humans), and energy is only
transmitted between resonating objects

DISADVANTAGES
Transmissions

possible only in few meters

Possibility of energy theft
Efficiency decreases with distance
The resonance condition should be satisfied
and if any error exists, there is no possibility of
power transfer.

Will

it harm me?
Will it harm the environment?
Will it interfere with important
communication?

NO

APPLICATIONS

21

Direct Wireless Powerwhen all the power a device

needs is provided wirelessly, and no batteries are
required. This mode is for a device that is always used
within range of its WiTricity power source.
Automatic Wireless Chargingwhen a device with
rechargeable batteries charges itself while still in use or
at rest, without requiring a power cord or battery
replacement. This mode is for a mobile device that may
be used both in and out of range of its WiTricity power
source

Microwave Power Transfer (MPT) is a

form of wave power transfer that
sends energy through air in the form
of microwaves.

APPLICATIONS
Recently a Canadian program sent up SHARP
(Stationary High Altitude Relay Platform), a small
unmanned aircraft powered completely by energy
beamed to it from the ground through
microwaves.
Solar Power Satellites (SPS) could also be an
application for MPT. Beaming solar energy
collected from satellites or solar panels on the
moon to Earth could be a solution to our clean
energy issues.
