Hatties Children
Hattie's eldest son, Granville Levi (1886) married Addie. They had one daughter named Lillian and there were
other children. They moved to Minnesota (Middle River according to WWI draft registration). He and his
family lived there until 1922. Levi moved to Chicago and was there in 1939. The census records show him in
Iowa before that. Levi died in 1952.
Nell Frances Cook (1889) married George LaBolle and they farmed in Loda, Illinois. They had six sons: John,
Oscar, Peter, Paul, Roy and Clifford. Nell died in 1964. Nell had nursing training.
Iva Mae Cook (1890) married William (Big Bill) Kuntz. They farmed in Crestwood, Illinois. They had five
kids: Mary, Ruth, Bill, Jim and Jerry. Iva died in 1961. Iva had nursing training.
Everett Cook (1892) married Mary and farmed in Lohrville, Iowa. They had three children: Vincent, Cecil and
Madonna. Everett died in 1968. Cecil continued farming there when his parents died. His daughter
Cecilia (Ce-Ce) and her husband continued the family farm when Cecil retired to town. Cecil is still living in
Lohrville in 2015 at age 83.
William Lewis (Bill) Cook (1897) married Thelma and settled in Chicagos Roseland neighborhood. Bill
worked at coal delivery and died in 1942. As the story goes, a neighbor had trouble with some criminals and
Bill, trying to assist, reached into a car and was dragged and killed. Bill and Thelma had two boys, Eddie and
Howard.
Atha Marie Cook (1899) had a son, Maurice, while unmarried. (Maurice is listed as J.W.s son on the 1920
census in Rossville, Illinois.) It is possible she was pregnant when her fiance died in WWI. When her mother
Hattie died in 1922, Atha moved to Iowa with Maurice and married Roy Craven that same year. Atha and Roy
moved to California, near Stockton, and had two more boys, Roy Jr. and Everett. Atha died in 1945.
Ethel Mae Cook (1904) was a wild one. She left home and moved across the country to California before 1920.
She settled in Shasta Co. near Redding and married Lloyd Garrison. They had a daughter, Evelyn. Lloyd died
and left Ethel a widow. Ethel remarried Wallace Williams who had a ranch in the hills near Whitmore,
California. Wally also died and left Ethel a widow. She sold the ranch and moved to Redding where she lived
near her daughter until she died in the early 2000s.
Geneva Pearl Cook (1906) was a sweet, active lady. She followed her sister, Ethel Mae, to California after
their mother died in 1922. She stayed by her sister in northern California and married Joe Craven in Red Bluff
around 1923. They had a daughter, Adair in 1924. Pearl divorced Joe Craven soon afterwards and moved with
her baby daughter to southern California. She met Gerald Boothby and remarried. Pearl and Jerry were a happy
couple and lived in Hollywood, managing an apartment building. When Jerry died, Pearl stayed with her
daughter Adair and Adairs husband, Marlin Leas, in Atascadero. Pearl died in 1990.
Albert Ernest Cook (1908) always called himself Ernie. Ernie and George, the two youngest of Hatties
children, went to live with their sister, Iva, after Hattie died. When Ernie was a little older he got a job with his
brother, Bill, delivering coal in Chicago. Ernie didnt like that work, so found a job with Ford Motors in
Chicago. He met Anne Adomenas who lived in the Roseland neighborhood, near Bills home. Ernie and Anne
accompanied Ernies friends Gus and Bertha Lindgren to marry in Indiana in 1928. While there Ernie thought it
would be great to marry Anne. They wed, too. Anne was only 15. Her parents had a fit and the couple did not
have a church wedding and move in together for a while. They had three children: Betty (Childs), Ernie Jr. and
James. Ernie Sr. retired from Ford Motors in the 1960s and traveled with his wife, often visiting relatives in
California and Florida. Ernie died on January 18, 1985.
George Howard Cook (1911) was the youngest of Hattie and James Cooks children. He married Helen and
settled in Midlothian, Illinois. They had four kids: George Jr., Roseanne, Paul and Katherine. George Sr. was a
butcher and worked for a long time at Surmas Restaurant in Homewood, Illinois. George died in 1991.
