James William Everett (J.W.) Cooks family Ernie Cooks father

James William (J.W.) Cook was born October 14, 1865 in Kentucky. He died June 28, 1949 at his daughter
Ethel Mae Garrisons home in Redding, Shasta co. California. He was buried in Loda, Illinois, where the Cook
and Stephens families had lived. He married Hattie Belle Stephens in 1885/1886 and the marriage produced 10
living children. J.W. outlived his wife by 27 years. He left his younger children in the care of the older ones and
traveled across the USA, staying with his children or relatives until his death.
J.W. Cooks parents (Ernie Cooks grandparents)
Levi Cook was born in Grant, Kentucky in April 1838, and died on September 28, 1908 in Jonesville,
Owen co, Kentucky. He married Mary A Reed (1845 1868) on February 7, 1865. They had 2 children,
James William Everett (b. Oct 1865) and Minnie ( ). Levis wife Mary died young and he remarried on
August 3, 1869, to Nellie Jane Robinson (1847 1912.) They had 4 children (half siblings to J.W.
Cook): 1. Johnson Berrywick Cook (1870 1930), 2. Dona Cook (1873 1964), 3. John S Cook (1877

and Evelina Kinman (1818 1857).

Hattie Belle Stephens Cooks family Ernie Cooks mother

These notes are from Albert Stephens's great grandson. Albert Stephens was Hattie Belle Stephens Cook's
brother. Hattie was mom to all the Cook siblings: Granville Levi, Nell, Iva, Bill, Everett, AthaMarie, Ethel
Mae, Geneva Pearl, Albert Ernest and George.

Stephens Family (Ernie Cooks grandparents)

Granville Allen Stephens and Sarah Frances Poor were Hattie Belle Stephenss
parents.
Hatties siblings in order of birth are:
1. Horiezow (Horrace or possibly Harrigan?) born about 1866,
2. Granville Allen Jr. born 1868 and died 1885 (drowned at 17),
3. Hugh H. born about 1869,
4. Hattie Belle, born 1870 and died 1922
5. George W. born 1873,
6. Albert born 8 October 1877 and died 24 February 1948,
7. John born 1879,
8. Mary S. (Stephens) Gee born 1881, and
9. Edward born 1882.
My mother's Aunt Lillian wrote a narration in 1984 of the information of the Granville Allen Stephens family
that she was told by her father, Albert, and her uncle John when she visited him in Champaign/Urbana.
The Stephens family immigrated to the U.S. from Scotland during the war between England and Bonnie
Prince Charlie. They settled in Virginia and migrated to Kentucky.
Granville Allen Stephens (b. 1841), resided with his wife Sarah Frances Poor, on a tobacco farm in
Kentucky. Their county seat was Flemingsburg-situated on the banks of the Ohio River ....
I have researched this area on a map of Kentucky and it is somewhat accurate other than the farm was not
located on the banks of the river. I have a map that of landowners of the time that locates it south of the river
and west of Flemingsburg. There is an area known as Muses Mill that it is north of.
Granville Allen Sr. died from a fall from his wagon. Albert was 11 at the time so that put date about 1888.
She further describes him as "a fine looking man who wore a drooping mustache."
By the time Sarah Frances died, Harr (Horiezow) had married and had children. Harr and his wife lived
in Illinois, and the younger children, at least Albert and Mary, went to live with them. My research shows
that all of the siblings were in Illinois at some time in the early 1900's to 1920. I am pretty sure that Harr was in
Vermillion, Ford, or Iroquois counties as that is where most of the other siblings were located until some of
them moved on. I think Mary died sometime after 1903 since that is when Cleo was born.
Edward and Hugh both moved to Iowa and George went to Michigan. Albert married Martha Lintner
and they farmed in the Loda, Illinois area until moving to Southern Minnesota about 1902.
Hattie was one of the older ones and married James William Cook in Kentucky in 1886. Hatties family
moved back and forth between Illinois and Kentucky. The 1920 census finds them in Rossville, Illinois.

Hatties Children
Hattie's eldest son, Granville Levi (1886) married Addie. They had one daughter named Lillian and there were
other children. They moved to Minnesota (Middle River according to WWI draft registration). He and his
family lived there until 1922. Levi moved to Chicago and was there in 1939. The census records show him in
Iowa before that. Levi died in 1952.
Nell Frances Cook (1889) married George LaBolle and they farmed in Loda, Illinois. They had six sons: John,
Oscar, Peter, Paul, Roy and Clifford. Nell died in 1964. Nell had nursing training.
Iva Mae Cook (1890) married William (Big Bill) Kuntz. They farmed in Crestwood, Illinois. They had five
kids: Mary, Ruth, Bill, Jim and Jerry. Iva died in 1961. Iva had nursing training.
Everett Cook (1892) married Mary and farmed in Lohrville, Iowa. They had three children: Vincent, Cecil and
Madonna. Everett died in 1968. Cecil continued farming there when his parents died. His daughter
Cecilia (Ce-Ce) and her husband continued the family farm when Cecil retired to town. Cecil is still living in
Lohrville in 2015 at age 83.
William Lewis (Bill) Cook (1897) married Thelma and settled in Chicagos Roseland neighborhood. Bill
worked at coal delivery and died in 1942. As the story goes, a neighbor had trouble with some criminals and
Bill, trying to assist, reached into a car and was dragged and killed. Bill and Thelma had two boys, Eddie and
Howard.
Atha Marie Cook (1899) had a son, Maurice, while unmarried. (Maurice is listed as J.W.s son on the 1920
census in Rossville, Illinois.) It is possible she was pregnant when her fiance died in WWI. When her mother
Hattie died in 1922, Atha moved to Iowa with Maurice and married Roy Craven that same year. Atha and Roy
moved to California, near Stockton, and had two more boys, Roy Jr. and Everett. Atha died in 1945.
Ethel Mae Cook (1904) was a wild one. She left home and moved across the country to California before 1920.
She settled in Shasta Co. near Redding and married Lloyd Garrison. They had a daughter, Evelyn. Lloyd died
and left Ethel a widow. Ethel remarried Wallace Williams who had a ranch in the hills near Whitmore,
California. Wally also died and left Ethel a widow. She sold the ranch and moved to Redding where she lived
near her daughter until she died in the early 2000s.
Geneva Pearl Cook (1906) was a sweet, active lady. She followed her sister, Ethel Mae, to California after
their mother died in 1922. She stayed by her sister in northern California and married Joe Craven in Red Bluff
around 1923. They had a daughter, Adair in 1924. Pearl divorced Joe Craven soon afterwards and moved with
her baby daughter to southern California. She met Gerald Boothby and remarried. Pearl and Jerry were a happy
couple and lived in Hollywood, managing an apartment building. When Jerry died, Pearl stayed with her
daughter Adair and Adairs husband, Marlin Leas, in Atascadero. Pearl died in 1990.
Albert Ernest Cook (1908) always called himself Ernie. Ernie and George, the two youngest of Hatties
children, went to live with their sister, Iva, after Hattie died. When Ernie was a little older he got a job with his
brother, Bill, delivering coal in Chicago. Ernie didnt like that work, so found a job with Ford Motors in
Chicago. He met Anne Adomenas who lived in the Roseland neighborhood, near Bills home. Ernie and Anne
accompanied Ernies friends Gus and Bertha Lindgren to marry in Indiana in 1928. While there Ernie thought it
would be great to marry Anne. They wed, too. Anne was only 15. Her parents had a fit and the couple did not
have a church wedding and move in together for a while. They had three children: Betty (Childs), Ernie Jr. and
James. Ernie Sr. retired from Ford Motors in the 1960s and traveled with his wife, often visiting relatives in
California and Florida. Ernie died on January 18, 1985.
George Howard Cook (1911) was the youngest of Hattie and James Cooks children. He married Helen and
settled in Midlothian, Illinois. They had four kids: George Jr., Roseanne, Paul and Katherine. George Sr. was a
butcher and worked for a long time at Surmas Restaurant in Homewood, Illinois. George died in 1991.
