Auschwitz

Concentration Camp

Built Oswiecim May of 1940.


Held Polish political prisoners.
Built far away from the cities.
First prisoners were German criminals.

Auschwitz I

Incarcerated prisoners of Nazi regime for


indefinite period of time.
Having prisoners do labor work
Ex: Construction, Repair Work, etc.

Targeted small groups of people to


eliminate.

Auschwitz I Purposes

Construction began October 1941 in Brzezinka.


Also called Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Largest population of the 3 camps.
Contained killing facilities.
More than dozen sections separated by barbed wire
fences.

Auschwitz III
Also know as Buna or
Monowitz
Established in 1942
Housed prisoners assigned to
work at Buna synthetic rubber
works

Bunker 1
Also known as Little Red House
Contained 2 gas chambers
Operated from 1942 until summer of 1943
Demolished in 1943

Bunker 2
Also known as Little White House
Contained 4 gas chambers and 1 crematorium
Built in 1943 and demolished in 1944

4 more gas chamber and crematoriums were made after
Bunkers 1 and 2
Almost 1,000 men, women, and children would be killed
in them each day.

January 1945, Soviet troops invaded Auschwitz.


SS troops evacuated.
SS forced about 60,000 prisoners march West.
Others marched Northwest.
Called Death March.
SS shot people who fell or couldnt continue.
Suffered cold, starvation, exposure.
