1. Carbon black is produced by decomposition of methane;

CH4 C + 2H2
The single pass conversion of methane is 60%. If fresh feed is pure methane and 25% of
the methane exiting the reactor is recycled, then calculate the molar ratio of fresh feed
stream to recycle stream.
[5]
2. Consider the following equilibrium reaction;

The equilibrium expression for the above reaction is (yC yD / yA yB) = 5. If the feed to the
reactor contains equimolar quantities of A and B and no other species, calculate the
equilibrium fractional conversion.
[5]
3. 100 mol of air (79 mole% N2 and 21 mole% O2) is passed over a catalyst at high
temperature. O2 completely reacts with N2 according to following reactions;
0.5N2 + 0.5O2 NO
0.5N2 + O2 NO2
The molar ratio of NO to NO 2 in the product stream is 2:1. Determine the moles of each
species in product stream. Also calculate the fractional conversion of nitrogen.
[8]
4. For the reaction A B consider the following flow diagram. The fresh feed of A contains
0.5% of inert by mole. The single pass conversion of A is 60%. The total feed to the
reactor (fresh feed + recycle) is 100 mol/h and moles of inert going into the reactor are
held at 2%. Determine the composition of recycle stream and how many moles need to be
recycled per mole of total feed to the reactor.Also determine the molar flow rates of pure
B and purge stream.
