English 9 course description:
The focus of English 9 is literature and composition. Students will review and expand
upon their knowledge of narrative, informative, and persuasive writing in preparation for
the PSSA in eleventh grade. We will review grammar, usage, sentence structure, essay
writing, research techniques, and the mechanics of writing. Our literary study will
include numerous short stories, non-fiction selections, poetry, an independently selected
novel, and Romeo and Juliet.
Materials needed for class:
All students must bring a pencil, some type of notebook/folder, and their agenda to
class daily.

*English 9 is required for graduation. Students who fail


will have to make it up in summer school.

Make-up work:
According to the Altoona Area School District policy, students who miss work due to
absence will be allowed a five-day period during which the work can be completed.
Students who were absent are responsible for checking with the teacher to obtain
any missed assignments. Students who do not make up work due to absence will earn a
zero on the missing assignments.
Classroom rules:
1. Respect and be courteous to
everyone.
2. Pay attention and be prepared.
3. Be on time.
4. Always do your best work.

General Discipline Policy:


1. Student will be reminded of the rule and given a
warning.
2. Student will conference with the teacher before or
after school.
3. Teacher will contact students parent/guardian.
4. Student will be assigned detention.
*Level II discipline issues will be dealt with by
the principal.
