November 7- Pop Culture and Cold War (12:15-1:15)

Class: 30-1A

Teacher: Ms. Scarff

Instructional Objectives: Students will- analyze ideologies that developed in


response to classical liberalism (2.6); examine the characteristics of ideology (1.5);
analyze and evaluate modern liberalism and ideologies that reject or provide
alternatives to classical liberalism (Comp 3).
Materials: CTV Latest Headlines http://www.ctvnews.ca/video , BBC One Minute
World News http://www.bbc.com/news/video_and_audio/ , Map Quiz, Mac Cart 2
(available from the library), Pop Culture and Cold War assignment.
Anticipatory Set: (12:15 12:25) Watch and discuss the news presented on the
CTV Latest Headlines and the BBC One Minute World News. We usually select one or
two additional stories to watch or read.
Content: (12:25-12:45) Hand out and allow time to complete the quiz. Its a really
simple summative quiz, out of 15 marks.
(12:45- 12:50) Review the assignment. You may consider showing The Eighth of
November by Big and Rich (use the official music video on YouTube) to
demonstrate modern pop culture influenced by the Cold War.
(12:30- 1:10) Allow students to use the laptops to research music or movies that
were influenced by the events of the Cold War. Even googling Songs about the Cold
War or songs about Vietnam can be effective. Offer any insights you may have!
Closure: (1:10-1:15) Their YouTube link and analysis should be e-mailed to me.
