English 10-2 2012 Course Outline

Course Content: Grade 10 students will understand and appreciate language, and use it confidently and competently in a variety of situations for communication, personal satisfaction and learning. Materials: Coil notebook or duotang with loose-leaf 2 Binder with lined and unlined paper Pens, pencils, eraser, whiteout, etc. Personal reading book of your choice USB key suggested

Key Focus Material: Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) A Play of Opposition (love vs. hate; joy vs. sorrow; choice vs. fate) Decoding/ Evolution of Language Graphic Novel (Anne Frank) Humanity and Perspective Development of Expression Novel Study (Miss. Peregrines School for Peculiar Children OR To Kill a Mockingbird) Intolerance and Prejudice Literary Techniques and Elements of a Novel Film Study (The Truman Show) 21st Century Literacy Media Techniques and Critical Consumerism Utilizing Non-Fiction will be a skill emphasized throughout the units. Competencies for each unit will be handed out in class. Each competency will relate directly to the summative assessments you will complete during the unit.

Course Evaluation: In this course, evaluation will be Competency Based. This means that your mark will directly reflect your understanding, or compentency, of the key focus material. Using this evaluation technique involves formative and summative forms of assessment, both of which will be used in this class. Formative: (Practice) this is not for marks, but it ALWAYS counts you will be provided feedback, both oral & written to guide your learning Remember: B (beginner)->P (progressing) -> C (competent) -> E (exemplary) this is evidence that you are ready for your summative assessments Summative: (The Big Game; Assignments, Projects, Essays, Tests) this is for marks Zeros arent permitted These are not permitted until you have demonstrated you are competent in your understanding and ability Mark Breakdown: Each unit will contain two or three summative assessments, which will be factored into a final mark. Re-dos: You do not automatically qualify for a redo of any summative assignment. You will have to demonstrate that you have re-learned the necessary information/skills in order to re-do an assignment. These requirements include: meeting with me during assigned Flex blocks to discuss re-dos and their necessary steps completing the redo within a 2-week window (An English department policy)

Expectations: To ensure a safe, engaging learning environment all students will be expected to:
