Unbroken Project

Freshman
Writing, Literature
Critical
The Unbroken Project was assigned to us after we finished reading the novel "Unbroken," a story
about a soldier in WW2 whose plane crashes in the Pacific, and then goes on to survive out on the
sea and in Japanese POW camps. The book itself was very good, and a fun read. When it came to
the project, we were given our assignment by taking a personality test. I got the "Interpersonal"
category, which meant that I perferred to work in groups. I was matched with other
Interpersonals, and we decided to throw a homecoming party for the main character of the book.
We chose the party idea based on our personality group, since we like working and talking with
other people. We also chose to make it a homecoming party, since it was a good way for us to
show the feelings and emotions of his family members who did not participate in the war. I
decided to put this project in the Critical Reasoning category, because it forced me to look at how
those around the main character felt, instead of just him. It made me step into the shoes of those
on the homefront, and see how having family members abroad, fighting a war, affected those left
behind. On the day of the presentation, my two groupmates and I brought in food, and we held a
fake party, welcoming home the main character. I played his brother, and gave a speech on how I
felt, knowing what my brother had been through. One of my groupmates played the soldier
himself, and another played his mother. Overall, it was a fun experience, and really opened my
eyes to how the families of those fighting abroad are impacted by wars, and how, even though we
might focus on those in the frontlines, there are still many left at home, going through just as
much pain.
