Assignment/Activity Title C-SPAN Documentary

YearSophomore
SkillWriting, Media, Research
Portfolio CategoryMedia
and Communications
This was the not the first time Ive made a documentary for the C-SPAN StudentCam Competition, but it was by far my
favorite. Ive done two documentaries in the past, one on gun control, one on immigration, both with the same team as this
years. Our previous documentaries had all been good, but lacked a key component each time. In 8 th Grade, our
documentary was very focused and had good information, but was missing flair. It came across as boring. In 9 th Grade, our
documentary was well edited, but it missed the point of the topic, and was built off too much interpretation, and not
enough facts. This years documentary, however, had both. It was edited well, and was entertaining throughout, while
being jam packed with information.
I think that this year I learned a lot about scriptwriting, and doing effective research. I had to work on fitting lots of
information into a short time period, as our time limit was seven minutes. Getting all the information was relatively
simple, as there is a plethora of online sources for infrastructure and transportation research, and quick google searches
usually gave me what I needed. What our group ended up doing was writing a long, uncut scrip that wouldve lasted
around 12-14 minutes. We then did multiple drafts, cutting it 2-3 minutes each time, until we got to the seven minute
mark. All of this allowed us to really make what is in my opinion our best documentary yet, and I think it really stands a
chance of a Top 5 finish.
I hope that the people that watch our documentary will really look and start to notice how deteriorated our countrys
infrastructure really is. Marylands roads are definitely on the good side, compared to the rest of the US, but cross over
into Pennsylvania and you start to see roads and bridges falling apart. I also hope that it will help get the discussion about
the United States infrastructure going, and that can help bring us closer to solutions.
If I was able to do it over again, I would make myself more vocal during the creative and editing processes. I think that I
had lots of good ideas that werent implemented because I didnt push hard enough to get them into the final product. I
would often suggest my idea, but let it be overrun by other ones, and I would just let it go. I think I couldve improved the
documentary a lot if I had just done that.
